Artificial intelligence and BrokerStar

Artificial intelligence (AI) enables systems to learn from a wide range of information in order to tasks that require human-like thinking skills. Deep learning can be used to train systems to process large amounts of data and recognise data patterns.

The history of artificial intelligence

The term «artificial intelligence“ was coined back in 1956. It is only today that AI is gaining in importance thanks to larger data volumes, highly developed algorithms and improvements in computing power and data storage. AI technologies are neither scary nor intelligent. Instead, it is characterised by many specific advantages in many industries.

  • AI automates learning through repetition and insights based on data. AI leads to large data reliably perform software-controlled tasks. Nevertheless, human intelligence remains indispensable for setting up the system and determining the right questions.
  • AI makes existing products more intelligent. In very few cases will you be able to buy a stand-alone AI application. Instead, products that you already use will be enhanced with AI capabilities. Automation, chatbots and intelligent machines can improve many tasks or products, from security and medical diagnostics to plant analyses.
  •      AI is adaptable thanks to generative learning algorithms. Just as the algorithm can teach itself to play chess, programmes and products can also constantly absorb such instructions.
  • AI makes it possible to analyse large volumes of data. Just a few years ago, it would have been almost impossible to build a fraud detection system with AI. Thanks to enormous computing power and big data, things are different today. The more data is made available for such models, the more precise they become.
  • AI achieves maximum accuracy thanks to neural networks. For example, interactions with Alexa and Google are based on deep learning. The more we use these functions, the more accurate they become. In medicine, AI processes now achieve the same level of accuracy as well-trained radiologists.
  • AI unlocks the full potential of data. With self-learning algorithms, the answers are in the data. AI helps to find them. As data plays a greater role today than in the past, it gives companies a competitive advantage. Companies with the best data gain an edge, even if their competitors use similar processes.

What challenges does the use of artificial intelligence present us with?

Artificial intelligence is creating change everywhere. The most important prerequisite for AI systems to learn is data. This is the only way to acquire knowledge. However, this also means that inaccuracies in the data are reflected in the results. Today’s AI systems are trained for clearly defined tasks. A fraud detection system is not able to recognise a policy.

How artificial intelligence works

Large amounts of data in combination with fast, iterative calculations and intelligent algorithms enable the software to learn automatically based on patterns or features in the data. AI is a broad field of research and encompasses many theories, methods and technologies.

AI and BrokerStar

AI is already being used by means of specialised software for automatic software testing. AI functions are also used in the reporting system. Currently, the use of BrokerStar data can be accessed. This would allow queries to be made more easily, e.g. via operation. This also requires specialised technology, as mainstream applications such as ChatGPT, which obtain data from the public domain, are not suitable. WMC is working intensively on these further developments, which will be incorporated seamlessly into the software.

    Reporting in BrokerStar

The term reporting covers all types of analyses, whether as a list or a graphic and regardless of the format.

In the following article, we explain how the reporting system in BrokerStar is structured. We look at technical and licence-related aspects and show you the various options.

    1. the BrokerStar reporting system
    2. standard, individual and ad hoc reports
    3. file formats
    4. services

    1. the BrokerStar reporting system

BrokerStar uses a so-called Business Intelligence (BI) tool, TIBCO Jaspersoft. This widely used technology allows all information from the database to be selected and output. Data can be rearranged and put into relation as required. The data can also be combined with information from other external data sources.

    2. standard, individual and ad hoc reports
BrokerStar distinguishes between different categories from a licensing perspective:
Standard reports are static analyses, i.e. different lists that are delivered to all customers as standard in BrokerStar as part of the scope of delivery. These evaluations can be graphically customised for the broker from 2022.
Individual reports are customised analyses that are prepared specifically for the broker at the customer’s request. They are not supplied as standard to other brokers and are subject to a charge. This also includes dynamic reports.
Ad Hoc Reports are analyses that are usually created by the broker itself. This requires a certain amount of expertise comparable to the creation of more complex Excel tables. Of course, ad hoc reports can also be created by WMC. Another service is the transfer of knowledge, e.g. in the form of training. As TIBCO Jaspersoft is a standard product, there are also various training options available on the Internet or from third-party providers.

    3. file formats

Reports from BrokerStar can be output in all available file formats. The most important of these include PDF/A (legally archivable, unalterable PDF), Excel, Word, PowerPoint or HTML. The standard reports are usually output as PDFs. However, there are also generic Excel exports for further processing. For output as Word, there is the option of automatically converting the PDF into a Word file.

Technically speaking, TIBCO Jaspersoft offers five different levels:
    - Level 1: Static reports using an embedded report library
    - Level 2: Guided and dynamic reports with simple interactivity, planning, security and automatic distribution.
    - Level 3: Highly interactive reports and dashboards using the report server
    - Level 4: Ad-hoc reports for self-service via a BI server
    - Level 5: Self-service data exploration against a data mart using a BI server

    4. services
    Included in the subscription:
    - All standard reports

Additional services subject to a charge
    - Customised adaptations to standard reports -> Individual reports
    - Individual reports. Dashboards, cockpits, Ad Hoc Reports
    - Training

    Licences
    - All reports from level 2 require the licensing of the MIS module

    Tips and tricks

    Instructions for the programme
In the WMC programmes there is a button at the bottom right of the page Knowledge Base. This will take you to the online manual. You can find the desired function via the content tabs on the left-hand side or directly via the practical full-text search at the top. The tutorials on YouTube are also helpful. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for straight away, our hotline can help you on 061 716 11 66.

    Import all contract data
WMC provides an Excel template free of charge, which most insurers fill in with the contract data. Some insurers provide Excel files that still need to be reformatted. The data can then be imported into BrokerStar. The new contract data can then be stored automatically using the IG B2B process Contract creation. Some insurers even supply the PDF of the policy, which is automatically saved in BrokerStar.

    DXP vs. projects
EcoHub offers two different options for data exchange. The DXP supplies data that is automatically read into BrokerStar. Any incorrect data is displayed in BrokerStar. The processes (formerly Giraffe) provide the identical data, which must be entered manually. EcoHub does not allow you to use both services. You must decide in favour of one variant. As BrokerStar always supports the latest IG B2B standards, you should choose the DXP variant. The WMC hotline will be happy to help you get started or answer any questions you may have.

    The complete customer history
Do you want a complete overview of all customer activities? Then it makes sense to integrate mail synchronisation and telephony. This allows you to display all mails and telephone notes via the history view. You get a complete overview of all events and, with the time recording function, all work performed. The hotline will be happy to show you how this works.

    Cookies
Do BrokerStar and BrokerWeb use cookies? Yes, but only so-called session cookies. These do not allow the pages visited to be tracked. Therefore, no notification is necessary when the page is called up. A completely different aspect is the influence of cookies on web applications. With all web solutions, including BrokerStar, it is advisable to delete the cookies in the browser from time to time or if errors occur. The function can be executed simply by pressing CTRL + F5 at the same time.

    Delete customer data
The new Data Protection Act (nDSC), which comes into force on 1 September 2023, requires that personal data that is no longer required or can be deleted at the customer’s request. The End of mandate field in the customer master can facilitate the deletion function. This makes it easy to create selections of the data to be deleted. For security reasons, deletion via mass mutation is not possible by the user. However, WMC does this work free of charge as part of its standard support.

    Ten cool functions
BrokerStar has many functions that make your daily work easier. Here are ten of them that you may not yet know. Did you know that BrokerStar supports all MS Office functions or that invoices can be sent to your customers automatically and fully electronically or that file storage can be mapped like in Windows Explorer or that many settings can be configured individually for each user?.

      Insurance Innovation Award

      Digital, seamless working: BrokerStar Ecosystem

On 12 October 2024, HZ Insurance commissioned WMC IT Solutions AG with the project

      BrokerStar Ecosystem for insurance brokers

nominated for the 26th Swiss Insurance Innovation Award.

      Project description
Ideally, a broker needs «all» data in order to optimise customer advice and internal controlling. One of BrokerStar’s goals is to obtain this data. Various sources are already being used for this purpose so that data does not have to be entered manually. BrokerStar from WMC offers an ecosystem that is unique in the industry.

Degree of innovation & pioneering work
Software for insurance brokers is usually an administrative system that more or less supports industry processes. However, this is by no means enough for digital, seamless work. The BrokerStar ecosystem allows any number of applications and services to be connected. Around 30 industry, partner, customer and office applications are available as standard.
